Problem: Outlook 2016 Prompting for Microsoft account login when Outlook 2016 starts on non O365 Environment

After a recent Microsoft update in Outlook 2016 version 16.0.6741.2017.Microsoft has enabled a new feature called Direct Connect to Office 365. This is a good feature when connecting to Office 365 without autodiscover but bad when you have Exchange On-premises.

SYMPTOMS

When Outlook starts it may connect to your Microsoft Exchange on Premises but then the User gets a prompted for password from a Microsoft login white window as if they were login in to a Microsoft web service.
This is a behavior from the Direct Connect Service for a Microsoft office 365 installation with  valid license in Outlook.

RESOLUTION

You can stop Outlook from checking Office 365 for settings by setting a registry key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\office\16.0\outlook\autodiscover
or HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\AutoDiscover
DWORD: ExcludeExplicitO365Endpoint Value = 1
